About this report:

For this report, persistence is measured from the census date for the noted fall term to the census date for the following fall term. Students qualify as persisting if they were enrolled at GVSU in the follow-up census, or if they graduated from GVSU at the appropriate level between the initial fall census date and the follow-up census.

The most common reporting convention for retention rates is to consider fall-to-fall outcomes only for students who were full-time degree-seeking FTIACs in the initial fall. You can obtain that number here by choosing "FT/PT Status" from the "Characteristic to display" list, "FTIAC" in the optional "Select Student Type" list, and unchecking the box for "Include Non-Degree Students".

"FTIAC" stands for "first time in any college", and refers to students whose only prior college experience was either before high school graduation or in the summer immediately between high school and college.

Counties shown on this page are the 6 that traditionally contribute the highest numbers of GVSU students.

"Full-time" means 12 semester hours or more for undergraduate students; Nine hours or more for graduate students.

Race/Ethnicity categories shown are defined by the reporting standard used by the US Federal government. For details, see US Dept of Ed Guidance on Collecting, Maintaining and Reporting Data by Race or Ethnicity.
* "Students of Color" presents an unduplicated count of students who chose at least one of the following, regardless of nationality and any other race/ethnicity values they selected:

  • African American or Black
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native
  • Asian
  • Hispanic or Latino
  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander

Students may enroll simultaneously in more than one GVSU college. Optional college selections use duplicative counts, so that each student is counted once in each college in which they're enrolled, and once in the university total.
